Step 7) How to Compose Your Music–Part 5

You have to tell your body to play or sing

Instruments and voices don’t play or sing by themselves. You have to tell your body to do that, in liaison with the invisible forces that drive it. When you know your body is simply a tool to help you play and sing, you’ll have much more control over using it. Practicing something until you don’t have to think about it anymore makes competence and connecting to your listeners a reality.

THAT’S THE GOAL OF PRACTICING – NO MORE THINKING NEEDED FOR WHAT YOU ARE SINGING OR PLAYING, SO ALL YOUR FOCUS IS NOW FREED UP TO EMOTIONALLY CONNECT SO DEEPLY WITH YOUR LISTENERS THAT THEY FEEL MORE THEMSELVES AGAIN AND LET YOU KNOW BY RESPONDING IN THEIR OWN WAY, JUST LIKE IF YOU WERE HAVING A GREAT CONVERSATION WITH SOMEONE BECAUSE YOU GENUINELY INVITED THEM TO JOIN IN AND BECOME PART OF IT.

Practical Exercise Step 7) Part 5
1)  Play or sing any scale very slowly on your instrument. While playing or singing it, shift all of your intention and attention onto something else entirely and notice what happens to your playing or singing. Repeat that 20 times.

2)  Now play or sing the same scale again very slowly on your instrument. While playing or singing it shift part of your intention and attention onto something else while keeping part of your intention and attention on playing or singing. Notice what happens to your playing or singing. Repeat that 20 times.

3)  This time play or sing the same scale again very slowly but ensure you keep ALL of your intentions and attention on what you are playing or singing. Notice what happens to your playing or singing. Repeat that 20 times.

4)  Now play or sing the same scale again but this time consciously decide right before you are going to play or sing each note that you are actually going to play or sing that specific note in that exact moment in time. Then play or sing it. Do the same with each note of the scale. The slower you do this the better result you will get from the exercise. Repeat doing that through each note of the scale 20 times.

5)  Now play or sing the notes of the scale but with your intention and attention again on something else entirely. Notice what happens to your playing or singing and your reaction this time.

6)  Now play or sing the notes of the scale with ALL your intention and attention on playing or singing the notes of the scale. Notice what happens to your playing or singing and your reaction this time.

7)  Now play or sing each note of the same scale as SLOWLY as you possibly can. Consciously sound out each note as you play it and don’t think about anything else while you are doing it. Repeat this 20 times.

8)  Now play or sing each note of the same scale as FAST as you possibly can. Consciously sound out each note as you play it and don’t think about anything else while you are doing it. Notice what happens to your speed when playing or singing the scale. Repeat this 20 times.

9)  Repeat 8) above.

10)  Repeat 9) above. Notice newly what happens to your SPEED and FLUIDITY when playing or singing the scale now.

11)  Now repeat 10) above until you are sure you know the sounds of that scale cold, and are NOW so familiar with its sounds that you could easily use to it to compose a song without a second thought.

Emphasis is on knowing the mechanical sounds of music so well that your attention is solely on composing and playing with all those sounds and not having to think about them.

End Result
That you realize consciously playing or singing with ALL your intention and attention is the best way to play or sing, and the slower you can play or sing something the faster you will eventually be able to play or sing it.

Also, that consciously sounding out each note of a scale as you play it, and not thinking about anything else is a very fast way of learning and training your hearing to differentiate the many different sounds, and, a very fast way to make a scale second nature to you.
