Part 4–4 Exercises to improve your ability to connect with your live audience

 

The exercise below gets you used to projecting your voice and/or instrument into every part of the area where a live audience would be sitting during your performance. Once you get used to the space you have chosen, it will be become much easier to perform in strange or unfamiliar places by just doing the actions of this exercise in that new performing location.

Conditional: it is not recommended you do the different methods of practicing in this Part 4 unless you are willing and interested, as their degree of personal participation required maybe more than what you are accustomed to.

Practical Exercise 4–4
Return to the front of one of the areas you chose in Part 4-1, and choose a spot out from where you are standing, and start intending your voice or your playing into that spot. If you want to start by speaking instead of singing that is OK.

The purpose of this exercise is to groove you in to becoming familiar with your own playing and singing ability in a non amplified way. Amplifiers don’t connect with people. YOU do.

If you really become familiar with your own intuitive abilities, it is possible to know when your intention has arrived where you intended it. That is very personal, and totally up to your own willingness to use your own spiritual perceptions, but successful performers instinctively will use them in some way and is key to their success.

Continue the exercise by choosing different spots all over the area where an audience would be sitting until you have covered the whole space to the very last row at the back and outermost point of the area you are in.

Familiarity with your own intention and where you direct it, will put you in the driver’s seat for connecting to your audience.

If you want to organize having people in front of you to do the exercise with then do that, as that will help make it more real.

The emphasis is getting used to KNOWING you have connected with a space, and if you have people there, then ensuring you KNOW you have connected with them too. Again, this is something you work out with yourself, as you will eventually be the performer who connects with their live audience spiritually, or not. I can assure you they will know when you do connect with them and will readily show it to you.

End Result
Keep doing the above exercise until you achieve a personal certainty you can intend your voice and/or the sounds of your instrument into any part of the space you intend to perform in.
